Dangerous Swimming Pools
New Delhi: After a boy of 21, Deven, was found injured after diving into a swimming pool and immediately rushed to the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre. What had happened was he had hit his head on the floor of the pool because it was too shallow and paralyzed his neck, which had resulted in spinal injuries, and subsequently the paralysis of the whole of his body below the neck. “This unfortunately is not a one-off case that we are seeing. It’s a trend that is most prevalent during May, June and July when youngsters between 15 and 21 years dive into recreational pools -- all restricted as per government order at 5ft -- and suffer spinal cord injuries,” says Dr. H. S. Chhabra, chief of spine service and medical director, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre. The solution to this problem is also given by the doctor, who says one should not dive into pools which are less deep than twice their height.
